Honey Wheat Bread


Ingredients


  • 1 cup warm water

  • 1 cup warm milk

  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast

  • 2 tbsp honey

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour

  • 3 cups bread flour

  • 4 tbsp softened butter

  • 1 tbsp salt


Directions


  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water and warm milk. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the liquid and let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.

  2. Stir in the honey to the yeast mixture until it dissolves. This will provide a touch of sweetness to the bread.

  3. Gradually add the whole wheat flour and bread flour to the yeast mixture, stirring it gently with a wooden spoon or dough whisk. The dough will become shaggy and sticky.

  4. Add the softened butter and salt to the mixture. Continue to stir until the dough forms a soft, pliable mass.

  5. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. You may need to add a little more flour if the dough is sticking to your hands or the surface excessively. This step can also be completed with a dough hook and stand mixer.

  6. Shape the dough into a round ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm, draft-free area for about 1-2 hours until it has doubled in size.

  7. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a bread loaf pan with butter or non-stick cooking spray.

  8. Punch down the risen dough to deflate it and transfer it to a floured surface. Gently shape the dough into a loaf, making sure it fits the size of the loaf pan.

  9. Place the shaped dough into the greased loaf pan and cover it with the kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Let it rest for another 30-45 minutes until it rises slightly above the rim of the pan.

  10. Bake the bread in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes or until the top turns golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
