Crunchy Apple Pie Egg Roll Delight: A Sweet Twist on a Classic Treat

Growing up, my love for McDonald's apple pies was unmatched. As a teenager, there was something so comforting and satisfying about biting into that warm, flaky pastry filled with gooey cinnamon-spiced apples. It was a treat I looked forward to, whether it was after school with friends or on a lazy weekend afternoon.

That nostalgic love for McDonald's apple pies inspired me to create a new twist on this classic favorite - Apple Pie Egg Rolls. By combining the familiar flavors of the beloved McDonald's treat with a crispy, golden egg roll wrapper, I found a way to bring a touch of nostalgia to a homemade dish. This recipe is not just a delicious dessert option but a homage to those simple joys of my teenage years spent savoring every bite of a McDonald's apple pie.

Apple Pie Egg Rolls

Ingredients

  • 4 Granny Smith apples

  • 1 lemon

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

  • 1 ½ tsp cinnamon

  • ½ cup brown sugar

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

  • 3 tbsp water

  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract (or bean paste)

  • Cornstarch slurry (2 tbsp of cornstarch stirred with 6 tbsp water)

  • Egg roll wrappers

  • Vegetable oil for frying

  • Extra cinnamon and granulated sugar for dusting

Directions

1. Peel the apples using a knife or peeler, then cut them away from the core and dice them. Place the diced apples in a bowl and add the juice of half a lemon. Shake to coat the apples to prevent oxidation.

2. In a preheated medium/high skillet, add the butter and diced apples. Sprinkle in cinnamon, brown sugar, and granulated sugar. Add water and vanilla extract. Allow the mixture to simmer on low heat for 2 minutes.

3. Pour in the cornstarch slurry and stir until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and let it cool for 5 minutes.

4. Place a spoonful of the apple filling onto an egg roll wrapper. Moisten the edges with water or egg wash, then fold and seal the wrapper.

5. Heat vegetable oil in a pan for frying. Fry the egg rolls for approximately 30 to 45 seconds on each side or until golden brown.

6. Remove the egg rolls from the oil and drain them on a cooling rack or paper towel for a few minutes.

7. While the egg rolls are still warm, toss them in a mixture of cinnamon and sugar to coat them.

8. Serve the apple pie egg rolls warm and enjoy the delicious combination of flavors and textures!
